A root canal consultation typically involves an examination by our endodontist (a specialist in root canals) to assess whether you need a root canal treatment. Here's what you can expect during the consultation:
- Medical and Dental History:
- The endodontist will ask about your dental history, any symptoms you're experiencing (such as tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, or swelling), and your general health.
- Examination:
- A visual examination of your teeth and gums will help the endodontist check for signs of infection, decay, or other problems.
- They may tap on the tooth to assess sensitivity or pain.
- X-rays:
- X-rays will likely be taken to get a clearer picture of the tooth’s roots, surrounding bone, and any infection in the tooth or jawbone.
- Diagnosis:
- Based on the exam and X-rays, the dentist will determine whether a root canal is necessary.
- If the tooth's pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth) is infected or inflamed, a root canal may be recommended to save the tooth.
- Treatment Discussion:
- The endodontist will explain the root canal procedure, the reasons it’s needed, and what the treatment will involve.
- The endodontist will discuss how long it will take, whether any follow-up visits are required, and what the healing process will look like.
